Light Sensitive |
MAY 23, 1995, SOMERVILLE, MA -- In the East Coast premiere of Light Sensitive , staged by Basic Theatre Company at the Boston Baked Theatre in Davis Square, Somerville, two lost souls meet in Hell's Kitchen: a blind, embittered ex-cabby named Tom, and a young, disabled woman named Edna. Surprise, they fall in love. Written by playwright Jim Geoghan (often compared to Neil Simon), Light Sensitive has a wonderful sense of humor and a keen understanding of the human condition. This show touches both the heart and the funny bone in one stroke.
Francine Chemnick directs with unassuming straightforwardness, a requisite approach to this tale of love, belief and acceptance. A simple story with believable people possessing flaws, fears, needs, and nobilities, Light Sensitive demonstrates the transformations caring can foster, and the age old lesson: beauty is, after all, in the eye of the beholder. This tale is brought to life by three of BBT's very talented actors. Mark Leahy as Tom Hanratty and Jim Barton as Lou D'Marco etch compelling characterizations with crackerjack timing, but it is Jennipher Lewis as Edna who really drives the action.
