BOSTON BAKED THEATRE PRESENTS
A. R. GURNEY'S THE DINING ROOM

FEBRUARY 21, 1997, SOMERVILLE, MA -- Basic Theatre Company opens its 1997 season with A.R. Gurney's The Dining Room at the Boston Baked Theatre in Davis Square, Somerville. Shows will be February 27 - March 15, 1997, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8 PM.

The Dining Room is a humorous and compassionate play set in a central room of family life. Scripted as a series of overlapping vignettes, the play visits a host of characters played by a talented troupe of six professional actors. Each of the eighteen scenes, which range from the comic to the serious, show a slice of life in which the dynamic relationships of family life are explored. Dodie Domino, owner of Boston Baked Theatre, producer of and performer in The Dining Room, describes the show as, "If the dining room walls could talk, this is what they would say!"

Rather than the scenery changing around the characters, The Dining Room is unique in that the characters change around the scenery. In a seamless collection of moments, the show presents a spectrum of glimpses into the human condition: the joys, sorrows, love and sadness that accompany family life.

Director Christianna Morgan, a rising young Boston director, describes the play as "similar to a lot of 'kitchen dramas' in that a dining room brings to mind a certain image. Nowadays, the dining room is not a room that's thought about very often - it's 'taken out' for special occasions and then 'put away'. This show takes us through time and reveals the course of events that has led us to this point. It's no longer a common thing for families to eat around the table, and here we see some of the reasons why."
