The Miller's Maid has an unexpected visitor: a strange little man, who demands to know why she is crying. But when she explains her plight, he retorts that he still doesn't understand her tears. It turns out that he has the power to turn straw into gold, and he agrees to help the young woman -- after getting her gold necklace in exchange.
