Robin Hood
The Story

Before I became a Merry Man, I was a troubadour. That's someone who earns his or her living by telling stories and singing songs to entertain people. Usually I would be rewarded with some coins, or perhaps a bit of food. I was by no means wealthy, but it was a decent living.

That all changed when that mean Sheriff came into power. As soon as he took office, he started making up sorts of taxes for the peasants to pay. There were taxes on their cows, on their gardens, on their shops, and just about anything else they owned. Pretty soon, almost all of the money that the peasants made went right into the Sheriff's pockets, and they had to work from day to night just to keep food on their tables. (That also meant that they had very little money to spare for other things, such as a starving artist.)

One day, I was standing in the town square of Nottingham, in the area where farmers would gather to sell their wares. There was a small apple on the ground in front of me, which didn't seem to belong to anyone. Since I was feeling terribly hungry, I picked it up and took a bite. Unfortunately, the Sheriff's deputy saw me, yelled at me for stealing the Sheriff's goods, and tried to grab me by the collar. I didn't want to get put into jail, so I ran away, as far and fast as I could. The deputy chased me all the way to the edge of the neighboring wood, known as Sherwood Forest.
